The language, history, and dance classes are held on Saturday mornings at St Wilfrid’s CE Primary School in Grappenhall, and have continued in recent weeks despite Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Residents were outraged, and they went to Warrington Borough Council and the school to express their dissatisfaction.
One told the Warrington Guardian: โI am totally disgusted to see that the classes are continuing in spite of what is going on in Ukraine.
โPutin is putting innocent Ukrainian people through what can only be described as a living hell. Through no fault of their own.
โI would have thought Warrington Borough Council would have put a stop immediately to these Russian classes and instead should put a united front on.
โThey should not be allowed to continue going on in the face of what is happening to the innocent Ukrainian people.
โAll Russian classes โ whether dancing or other academic classes โ should be cancelled and not supported.
โThis is a slap in the face to the Ukrainian people.
โI am sure there are a lot of local people who feel the same way.โ
And, as a result of the disagreement, the council has confirmed that lessons at the Church Lane location have been halted for the time being.
A WBC spokesman said: โWe were made aware of Russian classes taking place at St Wilfridโs CE Primary School and have been in contact with them about it.
โThe school had been independently hired at the weekend by a group of parents and their children.
โWe have agreed that the group is to be cancelled in respect of the current distressing situation in Ukraine.
โOur thoughts are with Ukraine and all those who have been displaced, are suffering, or have been injured or taken by the ongoing conflict.โ
